Catching Up: Part Nine

In my last "Catching Up" post, it brought us to the end of 2017... 2018 has been another difficult year, and a busy one. Our sweet Caroline had major surgery in February to reconstruct both hips and her pelvis to realign the shape and create a proper joint. Due to her low muscle tone (resulting from her vaccine injury as an infant), she has been unable to keep her bones in proper alignment which then ensures that they form correctly. This resulted in hip dysplasia and frequent dislocations of her hip joints. This in turn led to frequent falls, putting her at risk for injury, as well as damage to the bones and long term damage such as early onset arthritis, etc. So, at the orthopedic specialist's guidance, we opted for corrective surgery. She was in the hospital for a week. Then, in a full body cast - rendering her completely immobile - until late May. It was a long, rough road trying to keep her happy since she literally could not move, as well as just daily care.

Now, we are in the long process of recovery and rebuilding muscle, strength, and tone. She lost EVERYTHING she had gained while she as in the cast. As of now, nine months post surgery, she is still not able to walk, but she is able to crawl and climb up on the sofa with some difficulty. We are happy for even the smallest amount of progress! Our year has pretty much been taken up entirely with her care and recovery, but we have had a few moments to find joy in our everyday life along the way...
